The Walrus Championship

The SW Championship, the world’s most prestigious amateur, season-long championships. The Championship sees competitors race in a series of events spanning the season, earning awards and points as they do so . It culminates in the release of the final scoreboard at the end of the year and the announcement of the winner – the Champion of Champions, or Sir Walrus as he/she is otherwise known - and the prize of a giant wooden walrus to keep on their mantlepiece.

LEADERBOARD

How it Works

You can win points in two ways:

1) Official Walrus Events

By competing in these ‘official’ events spread throughout the season you will gain plenty of points. Do well and you’ll gain some juicy bonus points. The better you do the more bonus points on offer!

Official Walrus Events include:
  • Winter Mud Race
  • The Walrus E-Cycling stage race
  • Trail Run (Commonly takes place at the spring training camp)
  • Bicycle Time Trial (Commonly takes place at the spring training camp)
  • Swimrun (a punishing affair)
  • Bicycle Road Race (or Omnium)
  • Walrus Triathlon (The season finale - see here)
Points Available - Each member will gain points for:
  • Completion of the event: 350 points
  • Their finishing position. They will gain 35 points more than the person finishing behind them. The person in last place has 0 bonus points. (Times the number of people below you in the leader-board by 35 to give you your bonus points.)

Worked Example: 13 people enter the Walrus Time Trial. One person, Walter Stubbs, finishes 5th on the day and he's rather pleased with himself.

So how many points does Stubbs score?

  • 350 for completing the event
  • 160 for coming 5th in the event. (35 x 8 people below = 280)
  • Total: 630 points A good day out of the office.

2) Finish Line Events

By competing in any official Finish Line event around the world you can gain points. Any event is a Finish Line Event as long as there is a recorded time by some sort of 3rd party organisation. This could be everything from an Ironman to a Parkrun.

Points are awarded to every member who competes and finishes the event and whats more the more Walrus members who enter the more points you all get!

Points - A member will gain points by:
  • Race points: For completing the event you'll be awarded some points. The bigger the event the more points on offer. See below for a breakdown of the event points.
  • Bonus points: Multiplying the number of Walrus Members completing the event by 50. (No bonus points for just 1 member racing).
EVENTPOINTS BREAKDOWN
  • Running Events
    • 5k Parkrun or other 5k run - 0 points (but you do get the bonus points for 2+ racers)
    • 10k run - 150 points
    • Half Marathon - 350 points
    • Marathon - 700 points
    Cycling Events
    • Sportif: Over 100k - 150 points
    • Sportif: Over 150k - 250 points
    • Sportif - Over 250k - 500 points
    Multisport Events
    • Over 22k total distance - 200points
    • Over 28k total distance - 300 points
    • Over 50k total distance - 400 points
    • Over 100k total distance - 600 points
    • Over 150k total distance - 1,000 points
    Swimming Events
    • 2k Swim: 300 points
    • 5k Swim: 400 points
    • 10k Swim: 800 points
    SwimRun and Other Events
    • For Sumruns points will be taken from the Running and Swimming Events above - and not the Multisport Events.
    • For other events a sensible allocation of points will be allocated by the allocation delegation.

Worked Example: Bernadette Thickets and her 5 mates, who are all Walrus members, sign up for an Olympic Distance Triathlon. Bernadette gains:

  • 300 points for completing the race - as there were 6 members racing (6 * 50 points)
  • 400 points as it was a multi sport event of 51.5k in distance
  • Bernadette Thicket's total is: 700 points

All of the other 5 members would also gain 700 points.
